We do what's easiest. If we open the refrigerator door and a row of soft drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks are front and center, that’s what most of us will drink. Have a pitcher of water and filled reusable water bottles at the front of the fridge and chances are drinking water will become a habit. (Consider having the kids fill the water bottles and pitchers as part of their chores.)
Go right now and open your refrigerator. What’s the first thing you see? What is there most of? What’s easy to get to? What’s hard to reach? What does the refrigerator lead you to eat or drink? It sounds simple but a little refrigerator adjustment could make a big difference in the health of your household.
Buy it and they will drink it. If you buy several two liters or cases of soft drinks on a regular basis, you might want to start by cutting the number you buy in half. Inform your household that when the drinks are gone, that’s it for the week. They may start to pace themselves a bit and make less last longer. For example, if you buy a 12- pack of soda and there are four people in the house, you each get 3 drinks for the week. They can decide when to drink them, but that’s the limit for the week.
