Go Green
Using reusable water bottles and glasses are by far the most eco-friendly ways to drink water.
- 8 out of 10 plastic water bottles used in the U. S. are not recycled and end up in the landfill. 38 billion plastic water bottles land in the trash. To see what this looks like check out this video.
- Making the plastic water bottles for the U.S. takes 1.5 million barrels of oil a year, enough to fuel 100,000 cars.
- Tap water is distributed through an energy-efficient system while transporting bottled water long distances involves burning huge quantities of fossil fuels. About 25% of all bottled water crosses national borders to reach consumers, transported by boat, train, and truck.

Which plastic water bottles are safe? Remember 2-4-5.
You’ve probably heard that the chemicals in some plastics leach into water. Here’s the scoop:
- Water bottles made of #2, #4 and #5 plastics are fine.
- Most bottled water comes in #1 plastic. They are recommended for one time use. Don’t refill them.
- If you’re buying a reusable water bottle, don’t buy the colorful hard plastic ones with a #7 on the bottom. They may leach chemicals. Bottles that have a #7 on the bottom and also say BPA free are safe.
